Weekly police report

Sunshine Coast RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 19 to March 3:

Drugs/mischief

• On Feb. 19, vandals spray painted graffiti on a building in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, broke a lock on an electrical box and lit a firework inside it.

Police are still investigating, and ask anyone who sees graffiti in progress to call 9-1-1.

• During the evening of Feb. 24, a witness reported an argument occurring in a vehicle parked in the 5400 block of Wharf Avenue in Sechelt.

Police located the vehicle and spoke with the couple inside who admitted they had been arguing, but denied any violence had occurred. While speaking with the couple, police noticed the smell of vegetative marijuana. A search revealed several trash bags full of marijuana in the trunk. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. The file is still under investigation.

Break and enters/theft

• On Feb. 21, a boathouse in the 1400 block of Gower Point Road was broken into by an unknown suspect. The suspect gained entry by prying the lock off the door, but nothing was stolen. Police were also advised that there might have been other break and enters in the area. Police recommend that homeowners who are away for an extended length of time have a friend or neighbour check up on their residence periodically, to ensure that any property crime is reported as soon as possible.

• Around Feb. 21, vandals damaged a structure and property in the 6200 block of Mason Road in Sechelt. The suspects, who may have been travelling on dirt bikes and ATVs, used a log to break a window on the structure and rifled through a vehicle. Nothing was stolen and no other damage was reported.

• On Feb. 25, a resident reported that an 11.5-foot grey Zodiac with a Mercury 9.9 hp motor was stolen from Smitty's Marina in Gibsons in November 2014.

The owner delayed making the report until he had located the hull identification number. RCMP remind the public that the sooner a theft is reported, the higher the likelihood is that the stolen items will be recovered.

• On Feb. 28, a shoplifter was caught on surveillance stealing a large amount of meat from a grocery store in Gibsons. Police located and arrested the 23 year-old female, and released her on a promise to appear in court.

Traffic

• During the morning of Feb. 28, ferry staff reported a possible impaired driver at the Langdale ferry terminal, after the driver ran over a curb while pulling into the terminal.

Police located the suspect vehicle and noticed the driver exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver also admitted he had consumed liquor that morning. The driver failed a roadside alcohol-screening test and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Feb. 28, police witnessed a vehicle travelling well under the post speed limit on Highway 101 in Halfmoon Bay. The vehicle then proceeded to overcompensate while travelling through curves and also drifted over the centre line.

Police initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, who exhibited signs of intoxication. After failing a roadside-screening test, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.

• Police observed a truck on March 2 in the 5700 block of Teredo Street in Sechelt that had gone off-road and crashed into a tree. No occupants were on scene and the keys were missing. The vehicle, which had not been reported stolen, was destroyed by the impact. Police later located the driver, who admitted to distracted driving, and was issued a violation ticket.
