Two men and one woman from off-Coast were injured when the cable car they were travelling in fell 75 meters down an embankment in Langdale on Sunday, Aug. 17.
The accident happened at a residence in the 1500 block of Tideview Road in Langdale at about 3:15 p.m.
Sunshine Coast RCMP said a cable broke, causing the suspended cable car to plummet with a 24-year old Coquitlam male, 24 year-old Vancouver male and 22-year-old Vancouver female inside.
The male from Vancouver was able to jump out of the falling car and therefore sustained “less serious injuries in comparison to his counterparts, who sustained more serious injuries,” said media relations officer Sgt. Steve Chubey. “The Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft attended the scene and transported all three passengers to the Langdale Ferry terminal, where they were then transported to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) by air ambulance.”
The victims were kept at the hospital overnight and on Monday morning, Aug. 18 two were released from VGH.
“The 24-year old Coquitlam male is still in hospital with non-life threatening injuries and should be released in the next couple of days,” Chubey noted.
The unnamed victims were picked up by BC Ambulance Service helicopter in the overflow parking lot of the BC Ferries terminal in Langdale, which caused the 4:45 p.m. sailing to Horseshoe Bay to be delayed.
BC Ferries media relations person Deborah Marshall said the ferry was delayed by 17 minutes as a result of emergency vehicles blocking the unloading lanes.
“There were several emergency vehicles on scene and you have to give the helicopters a lot of space for safety reasons,” Marshall noted. “We are certainly willing to accommodate requests from BC Ambulance to help facilitate any injured persons get the medical help they need as soon as possible.”
In addition to the Coast Guard, RCMP and BC Ambulance Service, the Gibsons fire department responded to the call.
