The Sunshine Coast detachment is the latest in the province to join the B.C. RCMP’s Safe Place program.

The program, which originated in Seattle and is already up and running in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, allows businesses to self-identify as a Safe Place for members of the LGBTQ community and will offer them shelter if they are feeling unsafe or that they may be a victim of an anti-LGBTQ crime.

People who are the victims of anti-LGBTQ crimes or harassment can enter the business and stay there until police are able to attend. Participating locations sign a pledge promising that they will instruct their employees to assist victims and witnesses to anti-LGBTQ crimes.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said Basted Baker and PKLS Burgers on Cowrie Street in Sechelt were the first to mark their businesses as a Safe Place.

“Sunshine Coast RCMP feel that public safety for all citizens without discrimination is important. There was no hesitation when we were approached about implementing the program locally and we anticipate many other local businesses showing their support and coming on board with us" said Cpl. Aaron Janzen in a release marking the local launch of the program.
