Gibsons has declared Sept. 16, 2017 Gibsons Seniors’ Day.

Ron Sayer, president of the Gibsons Seniors Society, was on hand to hear the proclamation read at the Sept. 5 council meeting.

Sayer said the Society wanted a proclamation to help generate attention for the organization and encourage new members. The Society will be holding an open house at Harmony Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 16.

“Around 26 per cent of Gibsons’ population is seniors, which implies 1,700 odd seniors in Gibsons, and our membership is 320… Clearly there’s a challenge for us to grow our membership base,” he said.

Mayor Wayne Rowe praised the Society’s recent efforts to revive the programs at Harmony Hall.

“It’s a very important facility for the town and it’s been well managed by the Seniors [Society] for many, many years,” he said. “It’s very important to have a place people can gravitate to and be with peers and feel a part of the community.”
