Sechelt man facing trafficking charges

A 26-year-old Sechelt man is out on bail after court appearances in St. John’s, Nfld. this week where he faced marijuana trafficking charges.

Matthew Lloyd Hubbard was arrested in St. John’s about 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 13 with, according to a police news release, 23 pounds of marijuana.

He has been charged with one count of marijuana trafficking and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, an RNC-RCMP joint task force, issued a news release on the arrest and included a photo of at least 15 vacuum packs, inside a black suitcase.

But Supt. Marlene Jesso refused to say if the drugs were found as they appear in the photo, or if the suitcase was believed to be Hubbard’s suitcase, saying by email it would have to come out in court.

She did clarify the “short investigation” that led to the arrest and drug seizure, as referenced in the police statement, lasted “days,” as opposed to hours or weeks.

Hubbard was released on bail Tuesday, following court proceedings.

He, or a representative, will have to be back at court in St. John’s on May 28, to answer to the charges against him. Hubbard was required to provide $10,000 to secure his release. He will have to remain in B.C. while the case is being dealt with in the courts.
