Sechelt Chamber launches social media campaign

MUNICIPAL ELECTION

The Sechelt Chamber of Commerce is rolling out a social media plan to encourage everyone to get out and vote in the upcoming municipal election.

"Many people don’t realize that the majority of your tax dollars are spent at the municipal level,” said Chamber president Kim Darwin. "Our goal as a Chamber is to get the public out to vote and not sit back and be the silent taxpayer."

In the last municipal election, less than 48 per cent of eligible voters went to the polls.

“In the last election, almost 4,200 eligible voters did not give themselves the chance to have a voice. That is significant,” she said.

The chamber’s messages in this campaign will focus on getting more people out to vote. The plan invites every citizen to participate and involves all areas of social media including Facebook, Twitter, email, website and in print.

The Chamber is encouraging all businesses to utilize their email and company websites encouraging residents to get out and vote and to use their businesses to display signage encouraging everyone to be involved in the election message.

Every citizen is invited to change his or her profile picture to the chamber’s “VOTE” icon, downloadable from Facebook at Sechelt Chamber of Commerce or request from sdcoc9@telus.net. The icon is to be displayed from Oct. 29 to Nov. 14. Choices of messaging include, “Your vote DOES make a difference,” “Make your government work for you” and “Don’t be a silent taxpayer.”
