The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) supports BC Ferries’ plan to construct an elevated pedestrian walkway at the Langdale ferry terminal.

The walkway will act as a bridge connecting pedestrians from the land to ferries, via a temporary ramp about 55 metres north of the terminal’s existing bus stop. A new building near the bus stop will become the access point for the walkway.

The construction will also include the widening of the causeway currently used by pedestrians and transforming it into a bike lane as well as a lane for transferring baggage.

As part of its application to the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operation and Rural Development, BC Ferries sought the SCRD’s input on the proposed licence of occupation.

Directors voted that they had no objections to it, as long as the environmental assessment report analyzes impacts on spawning fish and migrating shore birds and gives a broader description of the best management practices regarding sediment.

BC Ferries will also have to get a building permit for the walkway as well as submit the project to Fisheries and Oceans Canada for federal review and authorization.
