RCMP say fire was intentionally set

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP PARK

Sunshine Coast RCMP and the Sechelt fire department were called to the Rotary Friendship Park on Wharf Avenue on Friday morning, (Oct. 10) after a citizen saw smoke coming from the men’s washroom.

The fire department entered the washroom, located a fire burning in the garbage can, and extinguished the blaze, which appeared to have been intentionally set.

In June there was a suspicious fire in a washroom at Hackett Park, and a few weeks later vandals caused a significant amount of damage inside the female’s washroom at the Rotary Friendship Park.

“Luckily in this instance, the fire department was able to put out the fire before any serious damage was done,” said Const. Harrison Mohr. “However, this easily could have gotten out of control. It is unfortunate that the people responsible for these acts show no regard for the families that use the parks and facilities.”

Mohr said that police will be patrolling these targeted areas at night.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents should contact Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266 or Crimestoppers at 1 -800-222-TIPS (8477).
