RCMP

Incident report for Oct. 9 to 16:

Cat Call

• On Oct. 6, police were dispatched to an open-line 9-1-1 call from a residence in Gibsons. Police attended and spoke with the homeowner, who had not called the emergency line and was not in distress. Further investigation located the only other occupant in the house, a cat, alone in the basement with an over-turned phone. It appears the cat accidentally hit the button that was programmed for 9-1-1.

Impaired Drivers

• On Oct. 15, police located an impaired driver during a road check set up at Highway 101 and Largo Road, Roberts Creek. The 37-year-old male driver from Roberts Creek, who was exhibiting signs of impairment and had numerous empty beer cans in the vehicle, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• During the afternoon of Oct. 18, police stopped a vehicle on the Sunshine Coast Highway near Shorncliffe Avenue in Sechelt. After the officer smelled an overpowering odour of marijuana inside the vehicle, the driver and passenger were arrested for possession of a controlled substance. After determining that the 19-year-old female driver was believed to be impaired by drugs, she was served with a driving prohibition and her vehicle was towed. The driver and passenger were subsequently released from custody.

Collisions

• On Oct. 12, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Marine Drive near Hopkins Road, Gibsons after a vehicle was reported in a ditch. Police located the unimpaired driver who advised he’d gotten stuck after cutting a corner too wide and repeated unsuccessful attempts to back out had depleted the battery. The vehicle, which was blocking the roadway, was towed out. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Oct. 14, police attended a two-vehicle incident westbound on Highway 101 near Timberland Road, Roberts Creek, after the first vehicle stopped with other vehicles waiting for a vehicle to make a left turn off the highway when it was struck by a second vehicle from behind. The driver of the second vehicle, who was not impaired, advised police that she had briefly looked over to her passenger while conversing and when she looked back at the road, noticed that traffic was stopped. The driver didn’t have time to stop and collided into the rear of the first vehicle before skidding into the ditch. No serious injuries were reported. The driver of the second vehicle was issued a violation ticket for following too closely.
