Incident report from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3:

Thefts/Found ATV

• On Sept. 29, a thief stole keys and a wallet full of credit and bank cards out of a purse at a business in the 5600 block of Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt. While police were in the process of reviewing surveillance video footage, the owner called to advise that someone had recovered all her items intact outside the business.

• Between Sept. 26 and 29, a thief stole two commercial crab traps from the waters off Epson Point near Thormanby Island. The traps contained chains inside to weigh them down and had yellow and red floats attached that were marked with the owner’s identification. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 16-6506.

• On Oct. 3, an off-duty police officer located an abandoned ATV off the logging road at the end of Reeves Road, Sechelt. The ATV, which is a 2004 Polaris with a distinctive paint job, was heavily damaged and appears stolen as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) was scratched off. Due to the lack of legible VIN, police are unable to determine if the ATV had been reported stolen already. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference 16-6600.

Traffic Incidents/ Hit and Run

• On Sept. 28, police attended a hit and run in the 5400 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after a vehicle owner discovered minor damage to her vehicle. A witness provided the vehicle owner with the licence plate and vehicle description of the suspect vehicle, which had since left the scene. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 2, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Oceanview Drive, Gibsons, after the first vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto the highway and pulled out in front of a southbound vehicle that was signalling a right turn onto Oceanview Drive. The first vehicle driver failed to see that there was a second vehicle behind the right-turning vehicle and was T-boned on the driver’s side. The driver of the first vehicle was uninjured and was able to drive home but the driver of the second vehicle, which sustained significant damage, was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driver

• On Oct. 1, a witness reported a possible impaired driver leaving a business in the 4300 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, after the driver was seen having trouble walking before getting into his vehicle. Police located the driver a short distance away. The officer smelled liquor in the vehicle, and saw that the driver had bloodshot eyes. He was given a roadside alcohol screening test but failed to provide a proper breath sample. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Oct. 3, a witness reported a possible impaired driver northbound on Highway 101 near Whitaker Road, Sechelt. The witness advised the vehicle crossed the centre line several times. Police located the suspect vehicle a short while later and spoke with the unimpaired driver who advised he’d been distracted after fumbling and spilling his coffee.
