Police Report

RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 5 to 12.

Extortion

• On Sept. 5, a Coast resident reported he was being extorted for money after he sent an unknown person he’d met through Facebook private photos of himself. The suspect, who is likely using an alias, demanded a sum of money or they would post the photos on the resident’s Facebook account for all his friends to see. The resident did as the suspect asked, but then the suspect demanded even more money. The resident put a stop payment on the first set of funds so isn’t out any money and was advised to contact Facebook to report the abuse of service. This type of scam is widespread and often unreported. To learn more about this and other popular scams, please visit sites such as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org.

Found Property

• On Sept. 6, two mountain bikes were found in the 1000 block of Roberts Creek Road. One of them has a local bike shop sticker on it. Owner(s) may claim with detailed description within 90 days. Please reference file 17-6075.

Impaired Driving

• On Sept. 6, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 3100 block of Beach Avenue, Roberts Creek, after a vehicle went off the road and crashed into a rock. The driver advised police she had consumed alcohol before driving and admitted to driving while impaired. After being taken to hospital for assessment, the driver was arrested and taken to the police detachment where she was given and failed a breathalyzer test. She was issued an administrative driving prohibition, a 24-hour driving prohibition and released on a promise to appear for court on charges of impaired operation of a vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

Theft

• On Sept. 2, between 2:30 and 3 p.m., a thief gained entry to a vehicle parked with its windows left open in the 5500 block of Shorncliffe Avenue, Sechelt, and stole an acoustic Yamaha guitar in a hard black case and ripped a stereo out of the dashboard. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-6132.

Mischief

• On Sept. 9, just after midnight, a resident reported three intoxicated males had broken a window of an apartment building in the 700 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons. The witness reported the males ran towards School Road, and that it sounded like they might also be damaging vehicles along the way. One of the suspects was described as a late teen male with a medium build, wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up. A female may have also been part of the group. Police made patrols but were unable to locate the suspects. No further reports of mischief were received.

Internet Scams

• On Sept. 5, a Coast resident reported an Internet scam after purchasing normally very expensive designer glasses online for a huge discount. The resident provided his debit card number and instead of the low price advertised on the site, discovered a large amount was taken from his bank account. The resident called the company and was told the site he used was a scam site out of China. The resident then found another large sum of money was taken from his account. The resident cancelled the card and was reimbursed a part of his losses, and advised to contact the Better Business Bureau and report the site.

• On Sept. 8, a Coast resident reported being defrauded of a very large sum of money after responding to what appeared to be a legitimate “Info Alert” from her bank advising her that her credit card had been compromised and that she should contact the bank immediately at the number provided. The resident made the call and spoke to someone purporting to be with her bank. The fake representative asked the resident for her credit card number, date of birth and mother’s maiden name. The resident complied and shortly afterward discovered close to $20,000 taken from her credit card.

The legitimate fraud department of the resident’s bank then called her and placed a hold on her account. The next day, the fraudster managed to lift the hold on the resident’s account, likely because they had so much of her personal information handy, but again, the proper bank authorities placed another hold on the account, mitigating any more loss. The resident, who is not being held liable for the loss, was advised to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Break and Enter

• On Sept. 10, between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., a thief gained entry to a residence in the 3200 block of Beach Avenue, Roberts Creek, and stole a blue 2008 Yamaha TTR230 dirt bike and an old grey laptop. Entry is believed to be through an unsecured sliding door. The dirt bike is described as having an electric start, a lighter blue front fender and damaged “bark buster” hand guards. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2017-6184.

Driving Collision

• On Sept. 11, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Teredo Street and Trail Avenue, Sechelt, after the first vehicle stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk and was rear-ended by a second vehicle behind it. The driver of the second vehicle admitted to being distracted and taking his eyes off the road briefly to retrieve a fallen pack of cigarettes and not seeing that the first vehicle was stopped. Fortunately no major injuries were reported and both vehicles, though damaged, were able to be driven from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
