Police Report

RCMP

Sunshine Coast reported the following for Aug. 29 to Sept. 4:

Bear Activity

• Late on Aug. 29, a resident in the 200 block of Ryan Road, Gibsons, reported an aggressive bear had ripped the storm doors off his back door and that the resident had to set off a firecracker in order to scare the bear away. The bear has reportedly been aggressive at other residences in the neighbourhood. The Conservation Officer Service has been advised.

• Early on Sept. 1, a resident in the 200 block of Ryan Road, Gibsons, reported a bear attempting to break into the house. The same bear is believed to have broken the door to get into the residence on a previous occasion. Police attended and located the bear on the side of the house going through some garbage and managed to scare it away. The residents, who had quite a job cleaning up the mess, were reminded of the need to remove attractants, especially now that the bear has learned the house is a food source and is likely to return.

Hit and Run

• On Aug. 30, between 9:45 p.m. and 10:05 p.m., a hit and run was reported in the 1100 block of Cartwright Road, Gibsons, after a resident discovered two of his motorcycles that had been parked legally on the shoulder had been knocked over and damaged. The suspect driver did not leave any note, but did leave behind some light blue paint transfer. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Vehicle Collision

• On Aug. 30, police attended a single-vehicle incident southbound on Highway 101 near Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay, after Emergency Health Services and the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department reported a vehicle in the ditch and a single occupant with possible injuries. Police spoke with the sober driver, who advised he approached a turn, lost control, and skidded into the ditch. Speed, driver inexperience, road conditions, and driver inattentiveness are all believed to have been factors in the incident. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driving

• On Sept. 1, police stopped a vehicle for lack of headlights and noted the driver exhibiting signs of possible impairment. The driver initially denied having consumed alcohol, but later admitted having had a drink a couple of hours before driving. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after a “warn” and “fail” result, the driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as a violation ticket for driving without a lighted lamp. The matter has been referred to RoadSafety BC.

Computer Scam

• On Sept. 2, a Coast resident fell for a common scam after receiving a call from a company purporting to be associated to Apple Computers. The caller told the resident her Apple computer needed servicing so the resident provided her credit card info to the caller and was billed several hundred dollars. The resident then called Apple Computers directly to confirm they’d received payment from her only to learn they had not contacted her and had no reason to contact her. Police remind the public to be very wary about giving financial information to anyone they haven’t directly contacted themselves, especially for services they haven’t requested.

• On Sept. 2, a Coast resident reported falling for a common scam after responding to a pop-up message on his computer telling him his computer was infected with viruses and to fix it, he needed to contact the number provided immediately. The resident made the call and gave financial and personal information to pay for the “service.” The resident later realized he’d been scammed and was able to cancel the nearly $400 charge before it went through. Driving Complaint

• On the afternoon of Sept. 4, a possible impaired driver was reported on Highway 101 near Garden Bay Road after the vehicle was witnessed crossing the yellow centre line. Police located the vehicle and driver already stopped on the side of the road, and spoke with the driver. The driver was not impaired but did express feeling very tired. Police confirmed the driver was able to drive the rest of the way home, but have requested a review of the driver’s medical fitness to drive. The matter has been referred to RoadSafety BC.

Found Bike

• On Sept. 4, a bike found in the 4400 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, was turned in. The bike may be claimed by owner within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference file 17-6029.
