RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 18 to 25.

Theft

• Early on May 18, a thief stole a 1970s era 14-foot tin boat with a 9.9 horsepower Mercury outboard motor on it from the government dock on School Road in Gibsons. The boat, which contained three life vests, a full fuel tank and two oars, has distinctive wooden floorboards.

• On May 19, a thief gained entry to an unsecured residence in the 1300 block of Gower Point Road and stole a red and black Hewlett-Packard laptop and cord. The laptop has a dent on the front left side and the keyboard does not light up.

• On May 21, police attended a shoplifting complaint at a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street in Sechelt, after staff witnessed the suspect hide some goods in a cart under her purse before leaving without paying. The suspect, who was caught on security camera footage committing the theft, was located and arrested by RCMP.

Traffic

• On May 19, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Shorncliffe Avenue and Barnacle Street in Sechelt. A witness reported the first vehicle southbound on Barnacle Street didn’t stop at the stop sign and made a left turn, colliding with the second vehicle which was driving on Shorncliffe Avenue. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to obey a stop sign. The driver of the second vehicle, whose vehicle had to be towed due to damage, was taken to hospital for assessment. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• Around 11:30 a.m. on May 23, police received a report of a car swerving while northbound on the highway towards Sechelt. An officer located the vehicle, and also observed it swerving, before it came to a stop for no apparent reason in the middle of its lane on Wharf Avenue. The officer pulled over the car, and determined that the driver was impaired by prescription medication. The driver was issued a roadside driving prohibition and his licence was seized.

Suspicious circumstances

• Early on May 21, a resident in the 4700 block of Whitaker Road in Sechelt reported hearing what she thought was a dog in distress or being beaten. Police made extensive patrols in the area with negative results. It was later determined that a pack of coyotes has been roaming in the neighbourhood and were responsible for the awful noises.

• On May 21, police attended a trespass-at-night complaint in the 5700 block of Spindrift Street in Sechelt, after a resident caught three males and two females aged between 12 to 15 peeping through his windows. The complainant chased and caught one of the young males who may have been using his cell phone to film the complainant through a window. Police are attempting to identify the suspects.

Rollover

• Also on May 21, police attended a single-vehicle rollover in the 12300 block of Highway 101 in Madeira Park. The driver and passenger were uninjured, but the vehicle sustained significant damage. The “N” driver, who was exhibiting signs of impairment, was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and violation tickets for driving without due care and contrary to restrictions. A two-year-old male doberman pinscher named Marky Boy was also in the vehicle and was not located at the scene. If anyone sees the dog, described as brown with long floppy ears wearing a brown leather spike collar, please contact the SPCA or RCMP, reference police file 15-3148.
