Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 23 to 29:

• On Sept. 23, a thief stole a silver iPhone from an unsecured vehicle that was parked in the 4300 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. The owner was unloading his vehicle and leaving it unattended for short periods when the theft occurred. The stolen iPhone is a Virgin silver model 5S and had been left on the dashboard.

• Between Sept. 9 and 12, a thief stole a kayak and paddle from a dock in the 13100 block of Narrows Road, Garden Bay. The blue kayak is described as a 10.5-foot Rhumba model.

• On Sept. 24, a motor vehicle and pedestrian incident was reported in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue, Sechelt. The driver, who remained on scene, advised he had been backing up slowly using his right side mirror for guidance when he heard the back up sensors activate and then heard a bump. The pedestrian, who appeared to have walked behind the vehicle from the left, was knocked down, and though not visibly injured, was taken to hospital to be checked over. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• Between Sept. 23 and 24, a thief stole a boat that had been tied to a government dock on Thormanby Island. The boat is described as a 16-foot aluminum runabout with a black Mercury 115-HP outboard motor on it.

• On Sept. 25, an arson report was made in the 600 block of Farnham Road after a witness saw two orange flashes outside his residence and observed a small fire on a cement pad near a parking lot. One young male was seen stamping the fire in an attempt to put it out while a second young male stood nearby. When the witness offered to get water, he was advised it was a gasoline fire. The fire was put out and the youth ran off. No damage appeared to have occurred to the cement, but the odour of gasoline was quite strong. It is believed a jerry can of gas left outside the building was used to start the fire.

• On Sept. 25, a motor vehicle incident involving a bear was reported on Highway 101 by the hospital in Sechelt after a westbound vehicle was struck by a southbound bear. The bear ran out onto the highway and into the vehicle’s driver’s side front corner, damaging the fender and bumper. The bear then charged the vehicle a second time before fleeing northbound into the hospital grounds. Patrols for the bear were negative.

• On Sept. 26, a possible impaired driver was reported northbound on Highway 101 near Selma Park Road, Sechelt, after a witness advised the vehicle was swerving all over the road and crossing the centre and fog lines several times. Police located the vehicle a short distance away but had to activate the siren to get the driver to stop. The driver drove over two curbs in an attempt to park before coming to a stop. The driver, who was not impaired, was issued a violation ticket for driving without consideration and failing to stop for police. Police also seized the driver’s licence and have requested the driver undergo a medical review.

• On the afternoon of Sept. 28, a single motorcycle incident involving a bear was reported on Highway 101 near Pratt Road, Gibsons, after a bear ran out from the west side of the road and into the northbound motorcycle. The bear struck the bike’s front wheel and forks, causing the rider to lay the bike down onto the roadway. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved. The rider, who was bruised but not seriously injured, was assessed by Emergency Health Services and his bike was towed. The bear fled into the woods on the other side of the road.

• On Sept. 29, police noticed a vehicle with expired plates stopped in the merge lane on the Port Mellon Highway, Langdale. Police spoke with the driver who advised he was a prohibited driver. The driver, who appeared intoxicated and had open and full cans of alcohol in the front seat, was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two fail results, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for no insurance.
