The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has issued its recommended top 10 New Year’s resolutions to make life better for animals in 2015.
“Quitting smoking or going on a diet may be great resolutions, but resolving to help animals will not only make you feel better, it will make a big difference in their lives,” said VHS executive director Debra Probert in a news release.
The resolutions are:
• Don’t buy eggs from caged hens. If you choose to buy eggs, buy certified organic eggs instead. They’re guaranteed to be free range and have the highest welfare standards.
• Adopt a homeless animal from the local shelter (and steer clear of exotic pets or animals sold in pet stores or by breeders).
• Get your dog/cat spayed or neutered and tell every pet owner you know to do the same.
• When your animal is neutered be sure to have their ear tattooed in addition to having a collar and ID tag.
• Give a vegetarian diet a try, starting with one meat-free dinner a week.
• Don’t buy fur.
• Switch to cruelty-free and non-animal tested products.
• Become a supporter of an animal charity.
• Don’t patronize any zoos, animal circuses, rodeos or any event exploiting animals.
• Do something kind for animals every day (Take your neighbour’s dog for a walk; write a letter to the editor supporting animals; hug your cat).
