The board of directors of Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Valerie MacLean as its new executive director, effective Dec. 15.

“I very much wanted to be part of an organization that makes such a difference in the lives of residents and the community, because making a difference and helping others is really all that matters,” said MacLean. “To find such an opportunity on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, where I have visited family for many years, and where my son Cameron attended Camp Elphinstone, is like a dream come true.”

MacLean has more than 20 years of experience in the non-profit sector, where she has gained a solid reputation for developing and implementing strategies that raise the profile of organizations, address financial and operational challenges, strengthen funding, and increase partnership and collaboration.

She spent 12 years at the Better Business Bureau, where she became well known as a consumer affairs advocate exposing illegal and unethical businesses, and gaining community support and visibility.

She moved on to head the B.C. Crime Prevention Association, the Vancouver Police Foundation and most recently, the Rental Housing Council of B.C. She has served as a member of the Consumer Protection B.C. Telemarketing Advisory Group, a board member of the Vancouver Crime Prevention Society, and a Commissioner of the Private Post-Secondary Education Commission, and was a 2004 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award nominee.

“Over the past few months, Tracy Wiseman has served as our Interim ED, and our board appreciates her work while in that role,” added Helen Carkner, SCCSS board president. “As we move forward, our board is confident that Valerie MacLean’s proven track record in revenue raising, organizational development and community outreach will be strong assets to our organization, and most importantly, to those we serve — so we hope our communities will show Valerie a warm Sunshine Coast welcome.”
