Gerry Zipursky, founding executive director of the Gibsons Public Market, is stepping down and Colin Stansfield will soon take the helm.

Stansfield has experience managing and governing non-profit organizations and was most recently the executive director at Potluck Café in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. The Potluck Café Society was formed in 2001 to help “end the cycle of poverty” by employing and feeding those living in the area.

A press release from the Gibsons Public Market noted in that role, Stansfield “acquired hands-on experience with delivering on a strong community and economic development agenda.”

Stansfield said he’s excited about his new position, and about moving his family to the Sunshine Coast. Stansfield is married and has two daughters, aged two and seven.

“My wife and I have been considering a move away from Vancouver if the right opportunity came along,” Stansfield said.

“The vision for the Gibsons Public Market is in line with our values and the Sunshine Coast is a perfect fit for the lifestyle we want for our family.”

He’ll start in his new role at the market on Nov. 1.

The market has been looking for a new executive director since April, when Zipursky announced he would be stepping down, although he plans to join the volunteer board of governors and still stay involved with the market.

“My intention was always to step down after we successfully fulfilled the vision and dream of creating and building a coastal public market that could become a community hub and marine education centre,” Zipursky told Coast Reporter this week.

“We now have the opportunity for new energy and leadership to assume the role of executive director of this incredible project. My hope, of course, is to continue to lend my support to the new executive director and board of governors.”

Before Zipursky officially hands over the helm to Stansfield, there will be a fundraiser and tribute to him held on Oct. 14 at the market. The 2017 fundraising gala will feature a gourmet dinner, star-studded entertainment and an action-packed live auction. Tickets are $150, available starting Aug. 21 at the market.
