The interior of the newly renovated Sunshine Coast Museum & Archives.

The Sunshine Coast Museum & Archives has spent much of the year under renovation, and now it is time to celebrate a new, more accessible museum space. Renovations to the building include the installation of a platform lift to the second floor, the creation of a wheelchair accessible washroom and a new entrance foyer to make the museum more welcoming.

The museum’s grand reopening is on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 1-3 p.m. and everyone is invited. Come celebrate the success of the project with speeches, ribbon cutting, refreshments and cake. The event will also be a chance to celebrate the donors, volunteers and organizations that made the renovation project possible, including the Sunshine Coast Community Forest and Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund. The event will provide a great opportunity to explore the new museum space, check out newly revamped exhibits and visit old favourites including the butterfly collection.

The museum will also be launching a new feature exhibit on Coast Salish weaving titled Syets-chet Ihen-tumulh txwchelhk w-anam/Our Stories Woven through Time. This exhibit is the third in a series of exhibits co-curated with the Squamish Nation, continuing in the spirit of past exhibits featuring Squamish stone tools and canoe culture. Curator Alison Pascal from the Skwxwú7mesh Lilwat Cultural Centre will be at the event to offer insight into the Squamish weaving tradition. The exhibit features two beautifully woven blankets, a large floor loom and an intricately carved spindle whorl. Admission for this event is by donation – come celebrate the new museum space and learn more about coastal history.
