Long weekend demand drains pumps in Gibsons

The Petro Canada in Gibsons gets a fuel delivery Tuesday evening. Some of the pumps were still marked “out-of-order” late Tuesday.

Gas stations in Gibsons had to temporarily shut down pumps delivering regular-grade gasoline after an unexpected spike in demand over the Easter weekend left them without any fuel.

Gas station attendants Coast Reporter spoke to say they ran dry late Monday. With the long weekend, there were no deliveries scheduled until Tuesday.

Regular gas at the Shell, Chevron and Petro Canada stations in Gibsons was going for about 137.9/litre as of Wednesday, which was significantly less than Vancouver and about 10 cents lower than Sechelt.

Gas station attendants said they saw a lot of people returning to Vancouver after the long weekend taking advantage of lower prices as they headed home, and that may have contributed to the tanks running dry before the next deliveries.
