This past summer saw some remarkable achievements within the local Sunshine Coast Sea Cadet program.

Conway Division is a satellite corps of 105 RCSCC Lonsdale that meets at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at Davis Bay Elementary School.

Throughout the training season, Cadets participate in many opportunities to hone skills and acquire valuable knowledge to help them succeed not just in Cadets but in life as well.

Local Cadets took every opportunity to learn and train hard all season and it showed in the summer months.

Two Cadets, Angus Sheilds and Tim Lacasse-Young, were selected to participate in a three-week summer training camp at HMCS Quadra learning basic seamanship skills.

Griffin Sheilds was accepted to participate in a six-week program honing his seamanship skills and allowing him to earn valuable certifications in marine radio, first aid and small craft operation. He was also able to compete in a regatta in Vancouver just last month.

And Caitlin Jarvis, after winning the prestigious Provincial Royal Canadian Sea Cadet of the Year Award and Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence, was selected to participate in a three-week foreign exchange program with seven others from across the country. These same Cadets will be participating in the provincial seamanship competition as well as the prestigious drill competition coming up early in the new year.

Although obviously water focused, Sea Cadets also participate in range practice each Thursday evening and volunteer time in their community by helping in shoreline cleanup and participating in the Elves Club telethon. Cadets are offered travelling opportunities to visit ships in port such as the HMCS Winnipeg or to participate in sailing opportunities in Kamloops and Vancouver. Cadets offer unlimited opportunities for youth age 12 to 18, male or female. There is no cost to join, uniforms are provided, and there is no requirement or expectation to join the military. Cadets learn seamanship skills, teamwork, leadership, marksmanship and sportsmanship, and develop friendships that can last their lifetime. There are numerous training and competitive opportunities throughout the year.
