Hey, big spenders

Federal Election

The last federal election in West Vancouver Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky Country was a fight between two of the highest spending campaigns in the country, according to financial reports filed with Elections Canada.

The eventual winner, Liberal Pam Goldsmith-Jones, declared $177,892.58 in campaign spending, making her one of the top 10 Liberals (among those who met the Feb. 19 filing deadline).

Incumbent Conservative John Weston spent $199,351.34 in a losing bid for re-election. That puts him among the top 10 of all candidates, and the fourth highest-spending candidate in his party.

Ken Melamed of the Greens reported campaign spending of $129,042.88. Melamed finished fourth, behind Goldsmith-Jones, Weston and Larry Koopman of the NDP.

Koopman is among the 200 or so candidates who have yet to file their reports. Elections Canada has granted extensions.
