Gibsons students send strong message to distracted drivers

Distracted drivers were handed customized messages in the school zone outside Gibsons Elementary.

Students in Grade 3 at Gibsons Elementary, along with ICBC and the Sunshine Coast RCMP, recently took part in a distracted driving campaign which sent drivers a stronger message than any ticket ever could.

The students each drew their own picture of something related to themselves, their school, or traffic safety. During the morning hours, youth liaison officer Const. Kyle Hrynyk and other RCMP officers then set up in the school zone outside of Gibsons Elementary, watching for people using their cell phones, speeding, or committing other traffic violations.

When drivers were stopped, instead of receiving a ticket they were issued a hand-drawn card from one of the students, with the message: “Think of me. Leave your phone alone.”

“Unfortunately some drivers are still choosing to ignore the messages about distracted driving,” said Const. Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP. “Some people might get the message from having to pay steep fines, while for others a picture drawn by a third-grader might be what it takes to really think twice next time before picking up their phone to read that text message.”
