Gibsons OKs charging station

Electric Vehicles
EV Fest
On Saturday, Sept. 16, electric vehicle owners from the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland gathered in Trail Bay Centre parking lot for the third annual Sechelt Electric Vehicle Festival. The event featured Buddy Boyd and Barb Hetherington, who recently returned from a zero waste trip across Canada in their new Chevy Bolt. Pictured is Patrick Mark with the electric assist tricycle he built himself.
Councillors in Gibsons have voted to go ahead with the installation of a Level II electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Lower Gibsons.

At their Sept. 19 committee of the whole meeting, councillors endorsed a staff recommendation to install the charger, which will cost about $15,000, in front of the public parking stalls on Gower Point Road, across from Winegarden Park.

It was Coun. Jeremy Valeriote who first suggested the Town should install a charger in the area, and he said he’s pleased to see the project go forward.

Coun. Charlene SanJenko supported doing the work as soon as possible, instead of including it in the 2018 budget.

The charger will be a so-called “smart charger” which will allow the Town to easily collect data and, if necessary at some point down the road, bill for usage.

Valeriote said he’s keen to see what that data show. “It will be interesting to see how much traffic this brings and ask staff to come back with a cost estimate for putting something like Level III in at a future date.”
