Gibsons keeping its options open on organics collection

Composting

The Town of Gibsons is considering curbside organics pickup after putting out a call for companies interesting in taking on the project, but it’s not ready to sign a deal yet.

Only one company, Grayco Ventures, which handles garbage collection in Gibsons, responded. Grayco proposed a system that would cost about $184.45 per household per year in the first year, then $93.20 after that.

The Town also recently commissioned a survey on organics (kitchen scraps and green waste) diversion that got 906 responses, with about 60 per cent favouring a drop-off system and 40 per cent favouring curbside pickup.

Mayor Wayne Rowe noted that he’d been requested by the acting chair of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to hold off on any decisions so the Town and SCRD could work together.

Coun. Silas White, who chaired the Town’s Zero Waste Committee, said that while it would be “a move forward from what we have now” and “definitely cut to the chase” when it comes to diverting organics, he was reluctant to support it because curbside collection was not part of the recommendations of that committee.

In the end council adopted a recommendation calling for staff to come back in September with “contract details including an implementation timeline and a discussion of how the SCRD organics strategy and curbside program fulfill the recommendations of the Zero Waste Committee.”

White voted against the recommendation.
