Roberts Creek fire chief Pat Higgins says Tuesday night’s heavy rainfall helped keep a blaze in an outbuilding from spreading.

The Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called out just after 11:30 p.m. June 14 by reports of a possible house fire in the 2800 block of Lower Road.

Higgins said when the first truck arrived around five minutes later, they found an outbuilding on the property engulfed in flames. The building was completely destroyed, and a couple of trees were burned.

Ten fire department members and two trucks responded to the fire, along with the Gibsons fire chief and one of their pumpers acting as “mutual aid.” Higgins said the situation could have been worse, but the recent wet weather helped keep the flames from spreading to a nearby home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
