The Quake Cottage simulator will be coming to Sechelt on Tuesday, June 7.

A small mobile trailer outfitted to resemble a typical workspace, the Quake Cottage demonstrates the need to proactively assess and secure various items in our homes, schools, and workplaces. Inside the Quake Cottage, a simulated major earthquake illustrates the importance of securing cabinets, furniture, flat screen TVs, refrigerators, cabinet doors, and a lot more. Up to three people at a time will be able to sit down and then feel and see what happens to their environment when an 8.0-magnitude earthquake occurs.

Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) chair Garry Nohr predicted the exercise will lead many to re-examine how well prepared they are at home and work for a major earthquake.

“The Sunshine Coast and much of B.C. is at risk of having a major earthquake occur at any time, so it’s important that everyone take steps to protect themselves from serious injury or damage when it finally happens,” Nohr said.

The Quake Cottage will be touring mid-island and Sunshine Coast communities over the next two weeks, so those living in areas at high risk of earthquakes can better understand the need to be prepared.

The June 7 stop in Sechelt will be at the Raven’s Cry Theatre parking lot from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Sechelt initiative is sponsored by the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Co-Operators and the SCRD.
