****Sunshine Coast RCMP have updated this story on Saturday morning, now saying there is no idication that the accident victim may have suffered a stroke prior to getting into this accident on Wednesday. RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

A 64-year-old woman from Garden Bay sustained serious injuries after her car collided with a tree Wednesday afternoon on Highway 101 near Hill Road.

Sunshine Coast RCMP, the Sechelt fire department and paramedics attended the collision shortly before 1 p.m. on Nov. 26.

“Firefighters had to use extrication equipment to get the woman out of the car. The highway was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic for a short time while emergency crews worked to help the woman,” said Const. Harrison Mohr.

She was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Sechelt, and was later airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital.

“She suffered serious head trauma from the collision,” Mohr said. “Roads were wet at the time of the collision, and police are still looking into possible causes of the crash.”

Mohr said this is the same location where a 21-year-old Sechelt woman was seriously injured in a September accident. There have been other collisions in the same area in the past.

“Our Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services (ICARS) investigators attended this location after the previous collision and conducted various tests of the roadway,” Mohr said. “Using their results, we are working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to find ways of improving road safety in the area. “ICARS was also consulted after this collision.”

Police remind drivers everywhere to slow down and drive cautiously when roads are slippery or wet.
