A 57-year-old man is reported to be in stable condition in Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) after he was airlifted by air ambulance Saturday morning after an accident in Garden Bay.

Sunshine Coast RCMP received the report of the accident around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22. The report was of a car in the ditch on Garden Bay Road, with the driver possibly trapped in the severely damaged vehicle.

RCMP and other emergency personnel responded and extricated the driver who sustained a serious head injury, was semi-conscious, and having difficulty breathing. An air ambulance landed at Pender Harbour Secondary School, and man was airlifted to VGH.

“Our officers will be speaking with the driver and taking a closer look at this collision,” said media relations officer Const. Harrison Mohr. “There was only one vehicle involved, and although the collision occurred on a windy stretch of Garden Bay Road, there is no apparent reason why the vehicle left the roadway.”

RCMP want to remind the public that even though there are many areas of the Coast that see little vehicle traffic at certain times of the day, it is important that all drivers follow the speed limits, wear their seatbelts, and drive with care, because an accident can happen anytime, anywhere, regardless of whether other vehicles are involved.
