WELLINGTON, New Zealand - The New Zealand Rugby Union says it has terminated the contract of troubled former All Blacks winger Zac Guildford, clearing the way for him to join the French club Clermont Auvergne.

Guildford's contract with the Crusaders was through the end of the current Super Rugby season, but Neil Sorensen, NZRU general manager of rugby, said Thursday that after discussions with the Crusaders' team management, it was decided to end the contract immediately.

Sorensen said, "We're really disappointed that Zac has not be able to achieve his full potential in New Zealand. He is a good man, talented but troubled."

Guildford's international career has been marked by a number of off-field incidents and he admitted last year to seeking treatment for alcoholism.
