The Sunshine Coast midget rep Blues have started their playoff run following a strong regular season which saw them capture the third seed out of 18 Lower Mainland teams.
Led by a strong veteran blue line featuring captain Brad Kohuch, assistant captains Robert Dixon, Tyler Graham and Lakota Joe and third year goalies Cam McLean and Garrett Devison, the Blues were solid defensively allowing the third fewest goals against in their league.
The offence was spread among all of the forwards with Brennan Meyers and Kyle Bergh leading the way with 21 goals each. Therin Hemstalk and Gavin Strom were right behind them, providing scoring and strong two-way play. Remaining forwards Nolan Caldwell, Austin Clarke, Robbie Casey and Henry Telfor and key swingman Nick Shoji all contributed timely goals and played strong disciplined hockey.
Rotary exchange student Emanual De Vonderweid from Italy lived out his dream by playing hockey in Canada, and despite starting with almost no experience, was a valuable contributor.
"Thanks goes out for all the incredible support we have received from our families and friends throughout this year. Without it none of this is possible," coach Ray Graham said.
The Blues began the playoffs at home last Saturday, Feb. 10, against a rough and tough squad from Coverdale.
After a tense opening period, the Blues began to take control by capitalizing on the power play. Goals by Kyle and Robert gave them an early lead.
Coverdale pushed back hard, but Garrett shut them down with a couple of eye-popping saves before two goals by Gavin gave the Blues some breathing room.
Nick capped off a stellar day scoring a late power play goal to go along with his three earlier assists and the Blues were off to the third round.
They don't yet know who the opponent will be, but the third seed assures them of at least one more home playoff game.
If you haven't come out to a Blues game this year you are really missing out on some great hockey. Next game is this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. You can also catch them on Coast TV thanks to the fabulous local TV coverage.
