A sinkhole developed impacting a the driving surface on Katherine Lake Road earlier this month. The road, which accesses an SCRD campground that normally opens in May remains closed.

Mark one Coast campsite off your list to visit until at least July. The Katherine Lake site, which closed in February when sinkholes damaged its access road, isn’t expected to open until sometime in this year’s seventh month, according to a May 9 press release from the owner, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).

The announcement said a further update would be provided in June, and that the campground operator will contact those with campsite bookings up until early July to cancel those arrangements.

At an SCRD committee of the whole meeting on May 9, community services general manager Shelley Gagnon told elected officials that obtaining the permits to do the work necessary to repair the road was “taking longer than expected."

The release detailed that the repairs involve a complete replacement of the culvert system and reinforcement of the road base. As the stream that runs below the road is fish-bearing, the SCRD must receive the proper permits to conduct the repair work from federal and provincial authorities.

It stated that “over the past two months, the SCRD hired contractors to complete surveys, hydrological work and engineering design for the road repair. Reports provided by these experts are being prepared for submission to the relevant authorities.

“The SCRD has been advised that permits may not be received for several weeks, until late June at the earliest. SCRD staff are doing all they can to expedite this process.”
