LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A man has been ordered to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a baby with a medieval-style battle axe and critically wounding the child's mother in a random attack on a sidewalk.

Thirty-eight year-old Harold Eugene Montague of Las Vegas was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty but mentally ill in May to first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder and battery on a police officer.

Four-month-old Damian Avila Castro was killed, and his mother, Sandra Castro, was gravely injured in the February 2010 sidewalk attack. The mother had been pushing her baby in a stroller and headed to the store.

Montague also stabbed his disabled sister-in-law, Monica O'Dazier, multiple times inside their home before bursting outside.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Montague offered a brief apology at Wednesday's hearing.
