Re: Dog attack on off leash trail leads to death (Coast Reporter, Jan. 11).
What happened to Pepper, the pomeranian was horrible! The 'apparent' indifference of the owner of the dogs that caused his death is unconscionable.
The story however, does have some holes.
1) Peppers owner couldn't see what was happening. She could only hear it.
2) She was responding before the attack. Did she know something he didn't? Small dogs are notorious for snapping at other dogs. Unfortunately when they do this they often create a fight when there was no intention on the part of the other dog to bite. And the small dog usually loses.
3) Bruce Haynes, Sechelt's bylaw officer, mentions Facebook as a source of information and seemed to assume that it was 'true'. I'm not comfortable with that. The information on Facebook, from what I saw, was actually incorrect. The attack that took place a few months ago was probably by something bigger than an average dog.
It is common knowledge in the area that there is wildlife in the park. I can't count how many coyotes I personally have seen in this park over the last few years. We know there is a bear in the area and several wolves were seen not more than a few months ago. Deer and elk are also dangerous to dogs and humans alike.
Kinnikinnick Park is a great place to bring a dog, allowing them to play on the field with other dogs and then hitting the trails for a good hike. Be alert, be aware of what and who is around you at all times. This is not a fenced area free of dangers. This is a wild forest with the potential of wild animals just a few feet off the trails.
And keep your small dogs close!
