Dozens of participants from several community organizations showed up for a frigid plunge into Trail Bay Wednesday afternoon.

The Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living (SCACL)-hosted event raised more than $4,800 for Sunshine Coast Special Olympics – far outstripping the $2,000 goal they had set.

SCACL executive director Clarence Li (who was dressed as an Olympic torch) said that when they put the call out for the event three weeks ago, they had zero expectations. “And look at you!” he cheered with the crowd of at least 40.

While the Sechelt mayor was in attendance, he didn’t take to the water. (To be fair, neither did the Coast Reporter.) Sunshine Coast RCMP detachment commander Staff Sergeant Jennifer Prunty did, however, enter the ocean in her police uniform.
