The SC Film Society continues with a season of excellent films.
Gabrielle is a romance/drama and Canada's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards.
It is a stunning, tender film about a developmentally challenged young woman's quest for independence and sexual freedom. Living in a group home, musically talented Gabrielle (Gabrielle Marion-Rivard) has found love with Martin (Alexandre Landry), a fellow member of her choir. They want to explore their feelings for one another physically, but are not allowed.
It screens this Monday, Jan. 27 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for members and $9 for a single event. An annual membership is $20.
Sound Out voices
Sound Out is a one-day voice workshop with Viviane Houle, vocalist, improviser and songwriter,at Grantham's Hall in Gibsons on Saturday, Jan. 25 from noon to 5 p.m. We all have the innate ability and need to vocalize, whether we call ourselves singers or not.This workshop is for anyone curious about the full expressive possibilities of the voice. No experience in singing is necessary.
The workshop will focus on exploring and expanding vocal range and character, with an emphasis on good use of breath, body alignment and physical grounding, as well as on the connection between the voice and the personality of each participant.

Horse rides
The Horse rides again in Roberts Creek next Friday, Jan. 31.
Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun is celebrating the lunar new year, Year of the Horse, with the official release of their new CD, which was self-produced, live off the floor at the SuperCabin. The songs tell real-life tales close to the heart and the funny bone with a refreshing twist and an alternative country style.
Doors open at 8 p.m. with music at 9 at the Gumboot Garden Café. Tickets are $10, available at the door.
GPAG
The Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) opened the year with the colourful exhibit Heroes of the Continent by the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, and it runs until Jan. 27.
The jurors included in the exhibit a work by one of GPAG's member artists, Stewart Stinson. The artwork provides a window to the world of sub-Saharan African grandmothers and celebrates their tireless work for a safer and brighter future for the next generation.
The Eve Smart Gallery is featuring a collection of paintings in acrylic, titled Emerging, by Odette Venuti.
Copper Sky
The Copper Sky Café in Madeira Park is hosting another in a series of songwriters in the round on Friday, Jan. 31. Tickets can be purchased at the Copper Sky and seating is limited.
Woods walk
Next Saturday, Feb. 1 the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives offers a slide show introduction to heritage sites and natural history with Byron Anderson, local artist and hiker.
Take a photographic journey into the Chaster Creek watershed and see remnants from the founding of the Town of Gibsons, plants, mushrooms, and viewpoints. Explore First Camp, a heritage site on Mount Elphinstone that was once the centre of logging operations and still contains historic artifacts.
Anderson's artistic photography and deep knowledge of the region will provide insight into the area's natural and cultural history. The slide show presentation starts at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion period.
House concert
Local musician Steve Giltrow will be performing with Juno award bassist Jodi Proznik and vocalist Laura Crema. They will be playing ballads, blues, Latin, standards, some originals and maybe even a cowboy tune on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at a house concert in Roberts Creek.
