FOG rolls in

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council will present their annual Friends of the Gallery (FOG) show Jan. 9 to Feb. 3 with the opening reception on Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Doris Crowston Gallery of the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

There is still time to take part in the show itself by submitting one piece of work produced in 2012 to be shown in the exhibition. Bring your artwork to the Arts Centre (corner of Trail and Medusa) on Sunday, Jan. 6, between 1 and 4 p.m. Renew or become a member of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and become an exhibitor in the show. Auditions

The Funtastics are back! This vaudeville group is holding auditions for the next season of old-fashioned shows to be held in April. Auditions are at the Seniors Activity Centre in Sechelt at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, for anyone who likes to sing, dance or tell a joke. There's no age limit. Met Opera

Raven's Cry Theatre presents the Met Opera from New York live in HD via satellite of Berlioz's Les Troyens this Saturday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m.

Francesca Zambello's acclaimed 2003 production of Berlioz's Trojan War epic returns to the Met for its first revival. Fabio Luisi conducts a cast led by American tenor Bryan Hymel debuting at the Met in the role of Aeneas, the hero who flees the ruins of Troy for a new set of challenges in the North African kingdom of Carthage. Deborah Voigt reprises the role of the cursed Trojan prophetess Cassandra.

Run time is five hours, 30 minutes. Tickets: $24 (general) and $20 (senior 65-plus). Call 604-885-4597 to have yours held for pick up.

Blues night

On Saturday, Jan. 5, the Blackfish Pub in Gibsons presents the blues with James Rogers. Music starts at8 p.m. and there's no cover charge.

Pecha Kucha

Popular Pecha Kucha night takes place on Friday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arts Building in Gibsons (464 South Fletcher).

Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, sometimes enlightening, rarely boring, PK nights are happening in more than 550 cities worldwide; Gibsons is the second smallest venue in the world. Local folks present 20 images and talk about them for 20 seconds each. Tickets are $10 at the door. Come early because the last show at the Arts Building was sold out.

Two Joels

Award-winning guitarist Joel Fafard returns to the Pender stage, this time with friend and fellow musician Joel Schwartz, on Sunday, Jan. 13. at 2 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music in Madeira Park.

Fafard plays and sings original material with the soul of a purist and the showmanship of a seasoned entertainer plus telling hilarious between-song stories with the confidence of a late-show host. Joining the award-winning musician for this gig is Toronto guitarist Joel Schwartz. Classes

Classes led by artist Mary Jean Brown start again on Tuesday, Jan. 15, with an offering of a drawing class with a model and on Thursday, Jan. 17, the well known big painting class at 5:30 p.m.

Classes will continue until the first week in March - two and three hours each week respectively of learning, drawing, painting, exploring new avenues and producing wonderful works of art that will make you proud.
