World show at Gibsons Gallery

Art Beat

Around the World in Watercolour, an exhibition by artist Hiroshi Shimazaki, opens at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery on May 29 and runs to June 30.

Shimazaki is a geographer and an aspiring landscape painter. Geography and landscape painting share a common concern, the study of the relationship between people and environment.

The opening reception is this Saturday, May 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. 

RHMS and Wildeman

Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun and singer/songwriter Brett Wildeman will take the reins on Saturday, May 31, at the Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

On June 5, Wildeman sets sail on a five-day sail tour, traversing the Strait of Georgia aboard Betina. The tour follows in the footsteps of Wildeman’s 2013 carbon neutral cycling tour as he continues to pursue innovative modes for touring.

Fundraiser

Community Song Circles is holding an Only Good Things Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to noon at 632 Martin Road, just off Gibsons Way.

This group comes together weekly to sing together for enjoyment, but their gathering also has a purpose. This sale will raise funds to enable Anderson and Thomas, two young students in Kenya, to complete their studies this year.  

Spring Mix concert

Spring Mix with Suncoast Phoenix Community Choir is a farewell concert from director Michael Grice that features guest choir Harmony Women’s Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, May 31,at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at Gibsons United Church.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 children under 12, at Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall, the Sechelt Visitor Centre and at the door.

Dance Time

Dance Time with Jim brings the rockin’ Jim Taylor to the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre on Saturday, May 31, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 or $15 for non-members, available at the door. Snacks are included.  

Fibreworks

The Fibreworks Gallery on the highway near Madeira Park is now being filled with more colour and texture as they prepare to open “thr3fold unfinished business” — the works of Catherine Nicholls and Laura and Linda Kemshall.

This is the third North American exhibit by thr3fold. Nicholls will be on hand at the opening this Sunday, June 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. with stories of the thr3fold pieces and giving of her time to answer questions.

Book launch

On Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at the GPAG, celebrated poets on the Coast mark the launch of a ground-breaking new book: Eight Step Recovery — Using The Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction. Gibsons co-author Dr. Valerie Mason-John, along with Micheal D. Mann and Martha Royea, will perform and speak about the impact of addiction on all communities.

How Soon is Now?

Opening at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Wednesday, June 4, is the new art exhibit How Soon Is Now? featuring the works of Adam Cramb and Bill Edmonds.

Both artists currently reside in Powell River and both work in mixed media.

The exhibit runs until June 29 with an opening reception on June 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Quest

An all new, scripture-based choral musical will be on stage at the School of Music in Madeira Park on June 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. as a presentation of Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society (PHLHS).

In a variety of musical styles, The Quest takes audience on a journey inspired by four common human questions presented by The Seekers. Answers to these questions are presented by The Temptations, while answers paraphrased from scripture are presented by The Voice and by The Chorus.

Tickets are $25, available at Harbour Insurance and EarthFair in Madeira Park and Sechelt Visitor Centre. Proceeds will benefit Sarah Wray Hall, a project of PHLHS.

Divas play

Definitely Diva will sing their tight and lively harmonies to out-dazzle the flowers next Friday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in the Sparling Pavilion and terrace of the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden.

Lynne Dickson, Wendy Hibberd and Patrice Pollack will get you grooving, tapping, swaying and definitely smiling. Tickets are $30 available from the Garden by calling 604-740-3069 or the Sechelt Visitor Centre at 604-885-1036. This is a fundraiser for the Garden. Roving Artists

The Roving Artists Show and Sale is on Saturday, June 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons. It’s free admission with refreshments provided. The show features the works of Mary Burgess, Pat Drummond, Janice Edmonds, Ross Harry, Tom Fraser, Carolyn Nicholson, Rita Sadlik, Julie Skippon, Leo White and Ann Williams.
