Word of art at GPAG

Preparations are in full swing for the 2014 Gibsons Public Art Gallery's (GPAG) very popular young people's art show, Words of Art.

Preparations are in full swing for the 2014 Gibsons Public Art Gallery's (GPAG) very popular young people's art show, Words of Art.

This is the fifth year of the show, which features the works of young people from around the Sunshine Coast, representing artists as young as two and up to 19.

"Words of Art reflects the theme of text, specially chosen for this year's partnership with the Gibsons and District Public Library, which is celebrating its 100th birthday," said curator and gallery vice-president Joanna Mackenzie-Enga. "The works of art submitted are an amazing and inspiring assortment of drawings, paintings and mixed media, including photography, video and sculpture, all from the perspective of our young people."

Planned special events include: teen band the Mama's Boys on March 16, a mixed media art class from artist Megan Mansbridge, Little Hands with Laurel Sukkau, and on March 29, a song writing event with Lowry Olafson.

The young people are encouraged to join with curators Sara Gillingham, Sukkau and Jean Pierre Makosso on March 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. to look at all the works to be hung, and to design an Emoji for the public art piece.

All participants receive a $10 gift card from Lisa's Framing and Art Supplies. The deadline for submissions is March 1. Submission guidelines are available at GPAG, the library or at gibsonspublicartgallery.ca.

The opening reception for Words of Art is Friday, March 7, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
