Women who love to sing

Art Beat

Nikki Weber presents Ladies Night — a September event for the last three years that is aimed at giving women who just love to sing a chance to do so in the comfortable atmosphere of the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (Trail and Medusa, Sechelt). It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. Singers are: Jacquie Allan, Jan Gillis, Bev Nielsen, Joy Germaine, Niv Harris, Rosette d’Souza, Kelly D and Wendy Campbell. The accompanists are: Ken Dalgleish on piano, Budge Schachte on guitar and Patrice Pollock on percussion. Tickets are $15 at the Arts Centre and other outlets.

Four artists

For one night only, four artists will hold an exhibition of their work in a private home in Gibsons. Milie Doubt, Nancy McMurdo, Ines Tancre and George Doubt will show their work this Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at 223 Camp Road, Gibsons. Park on Ocean Beach Esplanade and walk up Camp. For information, call 604-886-9644.

Forest events

This weekend the Gibsons Public Art Gallery presents several events to complement the current show, Our Forest. On Saturday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., Jill Conway and friends host Spoken Word and Simple Song. This event highlights the literary and lyrical muse of an eclectic group of writers.

On Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m., you are invited to Essence of Plant Magic Through Song, Drumming and Story, featuring Robyn Hume and Barb Higgins Xwu’p’alich, with singer Holly Higgins and a collection of drummers.

On Monday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m., attend an event with Leonie Croy of Sunshine Coast in Transition Initiative, Dana Wilson and Kym Chi of One Straw Society. A short film screens on our forest that ties in with sustainable living from a transition viewpoint. For information about these events, phone Michael Aze at 604-886-0531 or email info@gpag.ca

Gambier hospitality

About 25 residents of Gambier Island turned out on Sept. 6 to welcome four of the Gibson’s Landing Writers who were reading from their collection of stories and poems, Elemental.

They were a truly supportive audience. Thanks go to Richard and Louise Potter for assistance and clean up and to Barbara Miklashek for making arrangements.

The Community Centre, a terrific venue, recently celebrated their 20th anniversary. It was designed and built on donated land and maintained for the past 20 years by a huge amount of work and in-kind contributions from many islanders. Reportedly this was the first author reading to be held there — but possibly not the last.

Green Film

The Green Film series opens their fall season on Monday, Sept. 15, with the film DamNation at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons.

This film explores the changing attitude towards dams in the past 50 years, their removal and the recovery of the fish and eco-systems of the rivers. It is a timely film for B.C. as the province considers building larger dams such as Site C in the Peace River Valley and independent power plants on our rivers.

A short film by Vancouverite Damien Gillis, Site C Dam: Food for Thought, will also be screened.

Local resident George Smith will present an update on the Site C dam proposal and a discussion will follow. Doors open at 7 p.m.; film at 7:30. Admission is by donation. See www.greenfilms.ca for more.

Musicians for Arrowhead

Next Saturday, Sept. 20, Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun, dj little d and MC David Roche will perform at the Roberts Creek Hall to raise money for Arrowhead Clubhouse members’ fund. The evening is bursting with great entertainment beginning with Roche, an inspirational humourist. Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun will perform original music best described as outlaw roots followed by dj little d, who will keep everyone on the dance floor.

Tickets are $10, available at Swish in Gibsons, Arrowhead Clubhouse in Sechelt, MELOmania in Roberts Creek and at the door. Music starts at 8 p.m.

Art and music awards

It’s time to nominate a worthy applicant or to apply yourself for this year’s Art and Music Awards presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. The Gillian Lowndes Award honours the life and talent of a promising young Coast dancer. Nominees for this award must demonstrate long-standing achievement, innovation and recent growth in their field of artistic endeavour.

The Anne and Philip Klein Visual Arts Award honours the lives of its namesakes who embarked on their artistic pursuits upon retirement. Nominees should be over 65 years of age with a preference given to those who have developed an artistic passion later in life.

The Louise Baril Memorial Music Award honours an active member of the Coast music scene who was the program director of Countryside Concerts from 1990 to 1994. The award is intended for Coast music students who are undertaking advanced studies.

Application forms can be obtained at the Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa Street or from their website at www.scartscouncil.com. Deadline for nominations is Sept. 28.
