Cellist István Várdai and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári perform Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

Two exceptional Hungarian musicians make their Coast Recital Society debut on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. The program will feature music for cello and piano by Mendelssohn, Stravinsky and Brahms as well as works for solo cello by Kodály and Ligeti. Artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright will host the artists in a pre-concert chat at 1:30 p.m.

Award-winning cellist István Várdai is a rising star in the cello world. In 2014 he won the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich. One year later he was awarded the Liszt Prize, Hungary’s highest classical music honour. Várdai, who plays a 1720 Montagnana cello, has performed throughout Europe, and in New York, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Florence, Tokyo and Beijing with great success. In 2012 he received the prestigious Prix Montblanc, awarded to the world’s most promising young musician. Várdai’s 2014 concert at New York’s Park Avenue Armory was praised by New York Times music critic Vivian Schweitzer: “His playing was commendable for its fluidity and virtuosity, distinguished by both a fleet-fingered lightness and a rich timbre.”

Zoltán Fejérvári has performed as soloist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Hungarian National Orchestra, Verbier Festival Orchestra and Concerto Budapest among others, under such conductors as Iván Fischer, Zoltán Kocsis and Gábor Takács-Nagy. A passionate chamber musician, he has participated in the Kronberg Academy’s “Chamber Music Connects the World” program and the Marlboro Music Festival. In 2016 he was a winner of the highly prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, given to “artists or ensembles of great quality and musicianship.”

Next month, Várdai and Fejervári will perform this program at Carnegie Hall, New York. This concert is sponsored by The Hearing House in Wilson Creek and Sechelt Insurance.
