View from George’s Rock

Art Beat

For years, George Stepanenko took daily pictures of Mount Elphinstone from the same spot. He did it to show that each day was new and different though he had no idea what he was going to do with all those pictures.

As a tribute to Stepanenko who passed away last month, his family decided to display 12 of the pictures, so viewers can see what he saw every day. The photos are for sale and part proceeds from each picture sold will be donated to animal welfare. The show is up at 101 Office Supply on Cowrie Street in Sechelt through January.

Banners and art

This year’s Banner and Young Artists Awards exhibit at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre opened Dec. 3 and runs to Dec. 19.

Each year elementary schools encourage their students to create a banner design. This year’s theme is When I Grow Up. Entries have been received from most of the elementary schools on the Coast.

Twenty designs will be selected and these will be painted onto banners by local artists and hung in Sechelt’s Civic Square in February.

The reception for the Banner Awards Ceremony is next Sunday, Dec. 14 at 12:30 p.m. where Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne will present the awards.

Accompanying the banner exhibit will be the Young Artist Award entries.

Youth between the ages of five and 18 were invited to submit works of art that they created outside of school over the past year. The reception for the Young Artists Awards is also on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m.

The gallery is open Wednesday through Satur-day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. See www.scartscouncil.com for details.
