A Travelling Book Café at the Gibsons and District Public Library features an interesting event this Saturday, Jan. 17 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Author Mary Burns leads a living history discussion of the U.S. war objector movement in the 1960s and ‘70s based on her critically acclaimed book Centre/Center.

Michael Klein, Dan Bouman and Ken Dalgleish — all with something to say on the topic — will join her for this discussion.

Anyone interested in the Vietnam era is invited. It’s free, but call the library at 604-886-2130 to register.

Creek Big Band

Ready to blow away some post-holiday blues? Dance to the Creek Big Band this Saturday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Gibsons Legion. Members pay $5, guests are $10. Phone 604-886-2411 for more details.

Film society

The Sunshine Coast Film Society (SCFS) presents the second film in its latest season to open in Sechelt at the Seniors Activity Centre this Sunday, Jan. 18. Doors open at 1:30, film at 2 p.m. A Separation has won 80 awards and is a morally complex drama set in contemporary Iran. SCFS members cost $5; others $9. The film will be shown again in Gibsons on Jan. 26 at Heritage Playhouse.

Doc speaks

Dr. Eric Paetkau, now retired, published his book The Doc’s Side in 2011, and it was a best seller here on the Coast. The pioneering doctor will be speaking at the Sechelt Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. on the subject of the history of medical care on the Coast with its beginnings in shamanism. The talk is free; call the library at 604-885-3260 for more details.

Suncoast Phoenix Choir

There is one more opportunity to join a non-audition choir, the Suncoast Phoenix Choir, coming up this Thursday, Jan. 22 at Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay from 6:45 to 9 p.m.
