Fashion designer

An artisan of hand-knitted sweaters will meet the public at Zocalo in Lower Gibsons this Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Cecilia Rebagliati, who showcases her designer knitwear under the Cecile Benac label, has captured the attention of consumers and fashion media.

Originally from Lima, Peru, where she learned to knit as a child, the designer relocated in the late '80s to Vancouver and completed advanced studies in fashion design and textile art. In 2000 and 2001, she was honoured with Matinée Fashion Foundation grants. She is known for her use of luxurious imported yarns, featherweight loopy mohair, tie-dyed ribbon yarn and washable linen, that have been hand-knitted and hand-assembled in Vancouver.

Abracadazzle, a family-oriented magic and illusion show, is coming to the Coast, featuring magician John Kaplan who gave his successful magic show in Sechelt two years ago to an audience of all ages. Tickets are available at Re/Max in Sechelt and Friends and Company in Gibsons. Ticket prices are $8 for children, $12 for adults and $35 for families of four.

Ruff Cut

Ruff Cut plays the Gib-sons Legion this Saturday at 8 p.m. It's a "dance the night away show" with classic pop/rock tunes from the '50s to the '70s that is sure to get the place hopping.

Correction

My apologies to young musician Breanna Picard whose photo appeared in last week's Coast Reporter. She was listed as Bryn Davies in an article about the Festival of the Performing Arts. Breanna played Dream Journey at the Piano Encore concert.

Wax Boats

Congratulations to Sarah Roberts of Gibsons for being short-listed for the $10,000 Danuta Gleed Literary Award for her debut collection of short stories, Wax Boats. The Writers' Union of Canada announced the finalists recently for its annual prize celebrating a Canadian writer's first collection of short fiction published the previous year. Roberts' book (published by Caitlin Press) is a collection of quirky tales about a fictional B.C. island community. The winner will be announced on June 5 at the Writers' Union annual general meeting in Ottawa.

The second- and third-prize winners will each receive $500. The late Danuta Gleed's first collection of stories, One of the Chosen, was posthumously published by Buschek Books in 1997. Royalties from sales of the book go to fund the award.
