Take an art stroll this weekend

Art Beat

Visit the galleries and many businesses taking part in the Art Stroll in the Landing this weekend, Aug. 9 and 10.

This Gibsons’ Art Stroll is celebrating its sixth year with five art galleries, 12 Landing businesses and 10 restaurants on board that will offer either gift certificates or specials this weekend. Gibsons Public Art Gallery will offer art draw prizes for visitors — artwork by Todd Clark and Sa Boothroyd. For information, call 604-886-0531. All are invited.

Rolling Arts

In Sechelt, pampered pieces of rolling art will take centre stage during the annual Coasters Car Club show and shine on Cowrie Street. The Sleepy Hollow Rod Run of classic cars through Halfmoon Bay takes place on Friday evening while the main show is on Saturday. Some of the vehicles will find their way to Pender Harbour for a Show and Shine on Sunday.

Reception

Metamorphosis opens at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (corner Trail and Medusa in Sechelt) with a reception this Saturday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. This show combines the work of many local artists in a variety of mediums. All are invited to stop by.

RHMS and Watson

Local musicians Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun and Matt Watson will be performing at the Roberts Creek Little Legion this Saturday, Aug. 9, at 9:30 p.m. This alt-country band RHMS have become known for putting on a great show, showcasing original material that makes you want to dance!

Watson will be performing songs from his debut solo album Riches to Rags, described as a perfect blend of rock meets blues. Admission is $5 for Legion members and $10 for guests with members.

Akroswirls music

The Sunshine Coast Akroswirls did not have a Walk for Lupus event this year; instead they are combining their efforts in bringing awareness of Lupus with the Davis Bay Parkway Society by holding Music in the Park with vocalist Jim Taylor. They hope this first Music in the Park event is a success because they would like it to be an annual musical fiesta. It’s on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mission Point Park in Davis Bay.

Arts map

The title of Sechelt’s newest tourist map sums it up nicely: Sechelt Arts Map: An Illustrated Guide to the (Almost Entirely Walkable) Must See Events, Attractions & Extravaganzas!

Free to the public, the brochure-style map highlights 12 arts and culture attractions to help visitors discover Sechelt’s creative community this August.

Local artist Jana Curll designed the map, and the District of Sechelt’s Arts coordinator, Siobhán Smith, oversaw its creation. It’s just what we need to cover all those events in Sechelt between Aug. 13 to 17, such as the long-running Hackett Park Arts and Crafts Fair and the Festival of the Written Arts, along with newer events such as Sechelt Summer Choir, Power of Paint and the Rainforest Circus.

Maps will be available at the Sechelt Visitor Centre and the Public Library. You can also download a PDF copy via the Sechelt.ca website, or pick up a paper copy when you attend one of the events.
