This Saturday, Feb. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. you are invited to join Jan DeGrass and Gayle Neilson for an evening of book readings and musical entertainment at Swish in Lower Gibsons, 287 Gower Point Rd.
DeGrass will read from her book, Jazz with Ella, and Neilson will read from her novel, Beogall's Choice: How a boy and a bird rescue nature.Michael Maser will round out the entertainment with instrumental guitar. Light snacks are provided as well as the opportunity to purchase signed copies of both books.
Jazz with Ella follows the adventures ofa Canadian student visiting the Soviet Union during the cold war era. In Beogall's Choice, Toby Myers, 14, is drawn into the world of birds by the great blue heron, Beogall, and he must fight to save Truewind Island's bird sanctuary.
Run, Lola, Run
On Monday, Feb. 4, the Sunshine Coast Film Society presents Run, Lola, Run (Germany 1998, 81 min.), an action film from director Tom Tykwer in German with English subtitles.
Lola gets a phone call from her smuggler boyfriend Manni who left a bag containing 100,000 deutschmarks on the subway where it was stolen. His desperate plan to replace the money - rob a bank. Lola's desperate plan - find the money somehow, somewhere, in 20 minutes. The tension has riveted palm-sweaty audiences in their seats since the film's release 15 years ago. The annual general meeting of the SC Film Society follows the show at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.
Admission is $5 for members or $8 for non-members.
Pennywhistle

Forest walk
The Sunshine Coast Arts Council will present A Walk in the Forest from Feb. 6 to March 3, a collaborative exhibition of 13 fabric artists from the group Quilters Out of Bounds.
Studies have shown that walking among trees relieves stress and positively impacts health. In Japan, a forest bathing trip, call Shinrinyoku, is a short, leisurely visit to a forest and is regarded as being similar to natural aromatherapy. Each artist has tried to recreate in her own unique way this sense of calmness and connection from living in a tree-filled landscape. Join the artists for a relaxing visual walk.
An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Doris Crowston Gallery of the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.
Coyote reads
The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts (FWA) will present award-winning storyteller and author Ivan Coyote on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Arts Centre. Tickets are $15. Coyote is the author of seven collections of short stories, a novel, four CDs and four short films. She has appeared across the country and around the world to critical acclaim.
Coyote will also lead a three-hour writing workshop, Writing from Real Life, designed to help writers generate ideas and storylines. Workshop participants will learn how to create believable, three-dimensional characters and dialogue and how to turn everyday occurrences into little gems that reveal what makes us all so unfailingly human. This workshop is on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rockwood Lodge in Sechelt. The cost is $45 per person (includes coffee and snacks) and space is limited.
