Songs to honour her father

Jill Conway and Anna Lumiere perform in an evening of jazz standards and original songs and stories, My Father’s Voice, to honour the legacy of Conway’s father, Peter Shatford, who passed away in July 2014 at the age of 90. He was a popular singer on the Prairies during the big band era, as well as throughout his rich, long life.

The show is at 8 p.m. this Saturday, March 14 at Gibsons United Church. Tickets are $15 at the door or contact Jill at jillsheretosing@gmail.com.

Coffeehouse

Tonight, March 13, the Pender Harbour Music Society presents a coffeehouse at the School of Music in Madeira Park with Kenneth Norman Johnson and his original piano compositions, Ashley Hautala, singer/songwriter, guitarist, Taylor Howe, vocalist, Charlotte Norman and pianist Gen Katagiri. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Storytelling

Five fantastic storytellers gather to inspire and regale you with heartwarming stories about finding, building and loving family life this Sunday, March 15.

Ted MacDonald will offer Métis fiddle tunes to start off the evening. Check out Micheal Oswald, Gayle Macdonald, Gerry Hills, Marlena Blavin and David Roche at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. Doors open at 6:30 for the 7 p.m. show. Admission is $5 to $15 on a sliding scale. Partial proceeds will be donated to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society.

Children’s art

The Spring Break children’s art classes at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery start on Monday, March 16. Local artist Miyuki Shinkai will be leading students through a series of creative spring-inspired art projects that include drawing, origami, painting and calligraphy. It culminates in a reception for the entire family to join in at the end of the final class on Friday. The early session for five to eight year olds is already half full; the later session for nine to 12 year olds has room for more students. This series of five classes includes all the art supplies. Drop in to register or call 604-886-0531.

Art workshop

A three-day fun workshop for kids six to 14 starts Tuesday, March 17 at the Arts Building in Gibsons, and combines art, nature and science, exploring the evolving and complex relationship between our natural and urban worlds. Fool’s Journey/Garden

From March 18 to April 19, stop by the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, to see the works of Suzy Naylor, titled A Fool’s Journey and Roberta Mauel’s work titled Garden. The opening reception is Wednesday, March 18 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Artists away

Coast artists go on the road soon. Ann Wilsie has her opening reception for a group show from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Place des Arts Centre, 1120 Brunette, Coquitlam on March 26. The show runs until June 6. Coralita, a life-sized mermaid in bronze by Garden Bay sculptor Jack Gibson, has just arrived in Primary Elements Gallery at Cannon Beach, Ore. The artist and his wife will be there for a spring unveiling in May.
