music
Ken Dunn and Anna Green perform dinner music on Friday, March 16 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Legion.

Preparations are in full swing for the 2018 Gibsons Public Art Gallery’s (GPAG) Shout Out! Young People’s Art Show that runs from March 15 to April 8. GPAG is asking young people to submit two pieces of work in any medium to be delivered to the Gallery (431 Marine Drive, Gibsons) between now and Sunday, March 11 at 4 p.m. Works need to be accompanied by the entry form available at libraries and schools or downloaded from www.gpag.ca/submissions. All works will be exhibited from March 15 to April 8, and all participants, families and friends are invited to attend the opening party to be held at GPAG on Saturday, March 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. This is the ninth year of the event that features the works of young people from around the Sunshine Coast, representing artists as young as two and up to 18. Submissions are welcome from different ages and in various media, and they are not juried. This is an important difference from any other show, and helps build self-confidence. Every applicant who submits is assured of a place in the show. The show will tie in with spring break workshops in collage, bookmaking and, for the youngest folk, toys and magic books. There’s even a workshop on stand-up comedy. For further information, contact Michael Aze at 604-886-0531.

Figure Drawing Demo

On Saturday, March 10, from 2 to 4 p.m., join Gibsons Public Art Gallery for a free figure drawing demo and life drawing session. The afternoon runs in conjunction with Jane Hennessy’s and Shelley Rothenburger’s show Figures, Freaks and Spirited Beaks in the Gallery until March 13. The class will be given by Rothenburger, MFA, who is a sought after drawing and painting teacher in Vancouver. Hennessy will participate as the fully draped model. Both will be available during the afternoon to answer questions about their work. Bring your sketchbook and chosen drawing medium. For details, call Michael Aze at 604-886-0531.

This Weekend

• This Friday, March 9, the Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio play core roots music at 9 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Legion. They go to 101 Brewhouse and Distillery in Gibsons on March 10.

• The Coast Symphony Orchestra presents a spring concert at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons, on Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets for $20 at Laedeli, Strait Music or at the door, if any remain.

Mad Park

The Locals, Robin Atchison and Nelson Giles, will appear at Mad Park Bistro in Madeira Park this Saturday, March 10 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The Locals are a popular duo who play their own particular brand of original folk and blues. Great food and tunes. Get there early for a good seat.

Quilts on Show

On Saturday, March 10, Gail Hunt gives a quilting demonstration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Market, 473 Gower Point Road. She has taught quilt-making across North America and in Australia and her quilts have won awards in exhibitions since 1989. Or stop by the market in the afternoon and enjoy the musical sounds of Luci Herder from 2:30 p.m.

Bonar at Legion

Local musician and fun guy Bonar Harris plays at the Gibsons Legion on Saturday, March 10 from 8 to 11 p.m. with Ted McNichol. Check out the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #109 at 747 Gibsons Way. Join them for some blues, some pop, some country, some originals and a little jazz – the good kind.

Dunn and Green

Musician Ken Dunn and artist Anna Green perform in concert on Friday, March 16 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Roberts Creek Legion. They were a hit during the recent Sensuality show at Zócalo and you can join them for an intimate dinner concert. Dunn often performs solo, but when he is with partner Anna Green, their vocal harmonies enhance the emotional depth and character of live performances. His sound has a distinctive folk and country rock vibe that takes the best from Canadian folk music.

Writing Course

Carine De Kock offers a writing course focused on connecting with the body, breaking through creative blocks and opening up to the imagination. She brings her training as a meditation teacher and expressive arts therapist to the process. It runs every other week on Tuesdays from 1 to 2:45 p.m. on March 6 and 20, April 3 and 17 and into May in Lower Gibsons. Find out more at [email protected] or 604-886-0200 or see spacestobe.org
