Sechelt summer sounds

Art Beat

The Sechelt Summer Music Series continues this Saturday, July 26, with an afternoon show with Reg and Lynne Dickson and special guests. Listen to old favourites, standards and original music on the Sechelt Public Library lawn at 12:30 p.m.

For the evening show, Matt Watson rocks Sechelt with his high energy original rock and roll songs from his debut CD at 8 p.m. Opening the show at 7 is Sinmobile lite, an acoustic version of the alternative rock, four-piece, featuring father and son rhythm section of Kody and Rick Raymond.

Sostenuto

The duo Sostenuto — Serena Eades on violin and Anna Lumiere, piano and accordion — is performing this week in Vancouver. One show is in Kerrisdale this Friday, July 25, at 8 p.m. The two have built up a repertoire of musette, choros, tangos and jazz and they have a brand-new album recorded in Boston in the spring. Expect to see them back on the Coast soon.

Kale and Friends

The newly released Book of Kale & Friends (Harbour Publishing) features 14 super foods that are undeniably nutritious, yummy, easy to grow — and beneficial to bees. The authors, Sharon Hanna and Sunshine Coast resident Carol Pope, will be at Talewind Books in Sechelt signing copies and giving out goodies and growing advice this Saturday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to noon.

The current sharp decline of bees is a pressing issue for the authors, and helpful instructions are included as to how to plant, grow and enjoy all 130-plus recipes included and still leave enough of your bounty in the garden to bliss out your bees. This book is a follow up to the national bestseller The Book of Kale: The Easy to Grow Superfood.

Mandala

This Saturday, July 26, dance on the newly painted 17th annual mandala at the pier in Roberts Creek to celebrate a Day Out of Time and enjoy this year’s community art project.

Costumes

The past few years Driftwood Players theatre troupe’s costume holdings have been expanding with donations from the Panto Society and other generous contributors. At the same time, storage has been a challenge. Now, with the generous assistance of Janet Webb and John DeCleer, Driftwood obtained a retail space in the Gibsons Quay building, Suite 201, 287 Gower Point Road.

They will cull inventory through sales, as well as raise some revenue through costume rental. But volunteer help is needed, sorting, cataloguing and pricing the items, then staffing a shop. The more volunteers, the more hours the shop can be open. This is a great opportunity to spend time browsing some interesting costume inventory. All profits beyond minimal expenses will go toward Driftwood operating expenses and productions.

Please contact Maggie at 604-886-0628 or costumeshop@eastlink.ca with questions or to volunteer.
