Suncoast Phoenix Choir, the result of joining Suncoast Singers and Coast Phoenix choirs under the direction of Michel Grice, has their concert this Saturday, June 1. Hey Look Me Over! is the Suncoast Phoenix Choir's debut concert at 7:30 p.m. at St. Hilda's Church in Sechelt and Sunday, June 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Gibsons United Church. The concert will include performances by guest musicians. Tickets are $15 adults, $5 children under 12, available at the Sechelt Visitors Centre and Laedeli (Gibsons).

Student production

David Short invites the public to attend a performance of three plays by Grade 11/12 Elphinstone Secondary School students, to be performed at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons, this Friday, May 31, at 7 p.m.

The school has arranged for use of the Playhouse for these performances in a first step in working out a relationship between the school and the Gibsons Landing Heritage Society whereby the Playhouse will be a performance venue for the school. Performances are primarily for the parents and for those students not able to see it during the daytime. But anyone turning up at the door (6:30 p.m. doors open) is more than welcome for a donation of $10. The three plays are: Dziadzia and the Red Squirrel by John Biggs, Are You In Earnest? by John Kelly and The Girl Who Was Asked to Turn Blue by Ev Miller.?

Roving Artists

The Roving Artists are holding an open house, show and sale this Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Eric Cardinall Hall in Shirley Macey Park on Chamberlin Road in Gibsons. The Roving Artists is a diverse groupof artists, currently 12, and many are in their golden years.They have acquired a strong following of those in the community interested in their diverse subjects.The variety of artwork is outstanding and includes oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels and ink. In addition to paintings, a wide selection of impressive cards will be offered for sale. The Roving Artists is a non-profit group.

Motoko opening

Motoko's Fine Art Studio and Gallery opens again this Saturday for the summer season. The artist invites you to view her work and to enjoy the ambience of her gallery and garden. Hours are June and September: Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July and August: Tuesday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Rolland show

Potter Laurie Rolland of Davis Bay will be co-presenter at the annual Conference of Fusion: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association this weekend (May 31 to June 2).

Following the show there will be an exhibition of her work at the Johnathon Bancroft Gallery in London, Ont. from June 6 to 29. Locally her work can be seen at the Goldmoss Gallery in Roberts Creek this summer. See www.goldmoss.comfor more details.

Art expo

Laurie Verchomin announces the return of her son Evan Verchomin back from a five-year run in Boston as a couch surfing/barrista/artist. He will be holding Evan's Amazing Art Expo at the Gumboot Café. Archives from the vault include many characters inscribed on the backs of pizza boxes (blown up on plastic), limited edition giclee prints and original works on cardboard, wood, paper and canvas. This will be the artist's first exhibit. The reception is this Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Gumboot, with cash bar and open mike free styling, followed by karaoke at the Creek Legion.

Artists' workshop

On Wednesday, June 5, actors, dancers, writers, musicians and visual artists are invited to bring their latest project (monologue, dance, song, written word or any creative endeavour) to experiment and explore with fellow artists at the inaugural Driftwood Players Artists' Work In Progress from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Chaster House, Gibsons (Bonniebrook Beach). Young people's show

Students from Pender Harbour and Elphinstone secondary schools and the Sunshine Coast Alternative School are presently displaying their best art work at the Doris Crowston Gallery (Arts Centre) in Sechelt. The gallery is filled with colourful paintings, drawings, ceramic sculpture and an excellent collection of photography from students of the Alternative School. This highly anticipated exhibit continues until June 9.

Sensing concerts

A Cappella Strait and Chora-lations Children's Choir present Sensing Concerts June 7 and 8.

This choral concert explores music that awakens our senses and our feelings. Highlights include: When David Heard set to music by Eric Whitacre, and the 15th century setting of that text by Thomas Weelkes. Under the direction of Janice Brunson, the musicians will perform next Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m. at the Highland Centre in Gibsons, and on Saturday, June 8, at 8 p.m. at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt.

Tickets are available at Sechelt Visitors Centre, Gaia's Fair Trade in Gibsons and at the door, $15 for adults, $12 for students/seniors, children under 12 free. Highland Centre, 657 Highland Rd., is across from the Lower Road's intersection with Highway 101.
