Music in the Landing, a free program of music in Gibsons, is back in the Gazebo on the wharf tonight (Friday) from 7 to 8 p.m. with the Baroque and Blue Triofeaturing Tim Enns on drums, Sarah Harding, flute, and Kelly Smit, piano and flute.

Saturday morning in Pioneer Square join Back Porch Reunion, the father/daughter duo of Dale and Rosalee Stavroff with some home-style Delta Blues.

The first Saturday evening event takes place in Winegarden Waterfront Park. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic blanket to enjoy the funky grooves of the seven-member group,Sangita, with membersKalawna Biggs, Jay R. Pride night

Meet the authors

Christina Symons and John Gillespie, authors of Sow Simple: 100-plus Green and Easy Projects to Make Your Garden Awesome, will be signing their books and demonstrating current projects at Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons on Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m. Come and ask questions of the two knowledgeable gardeners.

Music jam

The Copper Sky Gallery and Café in Madeira Park hosts a regular Sunday music jam at 1:30 p.m.Performers and audience are welcome to just drop in.

Ceramics show

The celebrated ceramic artist Mary Fox of Ladysmith with be on hand in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Wednesday, July 4, for the opening night reception of Ceramics on the Edge 4, the annual juried exhibition of the best innovative new work created by local ceramic artists.

Two categories - established artists and emerging artists - are represented in this show, which runs to July 29. The opening night reception begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited.

Bag o' Books

On Sunday, the Gibsons Public Art Gallery will again hold its popular Bag o' Books Sale at the sidewalk level of the gallery starting at 10 a.m. When you buy a cotton eco-bag for $10 to support the gallery, you can fill it up with books, for free. This fun event is a fundraiser for the gallery.

Roche reading

David Roche presents a staged reading of Catholic Erotica (Be Proud of Your Shame!) on Thursday, July 5, at 8 p.m. at the Gumboot in Roberts Creek. Admission is by donation. Roche continues to sharpen his new show in preparation for a U.K. tour (but not in Belfast, where it has been banned). Johanna Renee will open.

Art school

The Gibsons School of the Arts has begun its summer school in the Arts Building with the first of its weekly programs. All six sessions are full to capacity and many of the students have come from far flung places such as California, Oregon and Singapore to visit Gibsons and learn new painting techniques. Be sure to welcome them.

Launch for Africa

Jean-Pierre Makosso launched his new books Human Works (English) and Oeuvres Humaine (French) in fine style at the Heritage Playhouse last week. The staged dramatic readings of his work made the poetry come alive. Funds raised by donations at the door will go towards the Isecheno Primary School in Kenya, a helping project of the Coast's Song Circle, who also performed beautifully at the book launch.

SOPA soon

Thursday, July 5, is the gala opening night of the Showcase of Performing Arts (SOPA).

This is the 11th annual fundraiser for the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse and will feature Nir Blu, SASSPenders, Driftwood Players, Gerardo Avila, DSdanse and fiddlers Esme McLaughlin Brooks and Maya Broeke. Celebrate with nibbles and a cash bar. Doors at 7, entertainment at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $18, available at Gaia's Fair Trade, Laedeli, Sechelt Visitor Centre or at the door. On Friday, July 6, at 8:15 p.m. enjoy an Evening of Dance with the very best of DSdanse Youth Dance Company and Dance Works Performance Company sharing the stage at the Heritage Playhouse. Tickets are $15 at the above ticket outlets.
